An excellent example of Queen Anne style architecture, this building is noteworthy for its asymmetrical façade, gracious bay windows, ornate trim at roof lines and wide original porch.
The structure originally on this plot was a law office and store, built around 1800. It was moved in 1888, and the present building was erected on the site. This remained a single-family residence for many generations.
Gardner Lamson bought the property in 1968 and remodeled the main structure into apartments. In 1969 the barn was converted to apartments as well. House and barn are connected by a wing.
The original barn purportedly contained the first flush toilet in Goffstown. The overhead wooden tank had a pull chain, and the seat cover laid over a stone-lined privy. Needless to say, all plumbing today is quite modern at 53 Main.
