There is no record of when this structure was built, but reference in the town history indicate it was standing in 1824, when Main Street was extended to connect with an early bridge over the Piscataquog River.

Originally this was the residence of William McQuesten. During the mid-nineteenth century, it was converted to a tenement house and later served as a boarding house.

Nineteenth-century landlords were fond of renovating. Over the years the building was raised half a story, and a large center chimney was replaced by three small chimneys with thimbles in each room. Front and bay windows were added. But the hand-hewn, bark-covered floor joists are still in place.

Gardner Lamson purchased the property in 1971 and did extensive remodeling, always keeping in mind the historic character of the structure.
