The original structure on this site was built around 1800 by Thomas Wallace, whose name lives on as Wallace Road.
It became a hotel in 1812, called Taggart’s, with facilities for parties and public meetings. The scene was enlivened by a nearby horseracing track. The structures on this site were destroyed by fire about 1880.
A spacious new building was constructed in 1898, and for a time it was a tea room.
Front bay windows and towers were added in the early 1900s. From this point the structure remained residential through several generations of owners until 1973, when Gardner Lamson bought the property and converted it into apartments.
